Don’t miss the return of 90s San Francisco ear-grinder pop masters, MARZIPAN, a band that Purple Onion denizens will remember as contemporaries of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Henry’s Dress & The Mummies.

Early 90’s San Francisco. Four friends working at 101 Records in North Beach decide to form a band and Marzipan was born. Mike Giordano, co-founder of the Echonet singles label, catches the group live and is so impressed he releases the first and until now, only Marzipan record- Echonet Records second 45, I Believe b/w Last Train From The Sun. Recorded by Maz of the Mummies, the single is an instant smash, quickly selling out still remembered fondly amongst collectors to this day. The band seemed destined for bigger things but in true rock & roll fashion just as quickly as Marzipan came together, they began to fall apart.

R.E. Seraphin “Jangling power pop that finds itself somewhere between paisley pop and post-punk. Each track is beautifully constructed: chiming guitar leads and a hushed yet wobbly vocal delivery that adds a sneering moodiness (which pairs well with the lurking romanticism of each song). It’s a little burnt out, but still holding on.

When I first heard the album, I immediately thought of the great Peter Perrett (The Only Ones), but there’s a Mazzy Star-era David Roback (RIP) sound and clear janglyness (a la The Feelies).” - Counterzine
