"Twisted Teens are a rock band from New Orleans. Their latest self-titled LP blew me away with eleven punk-tinged rock songs presented with simple melodies steeped in a demented drawl. The guitars wind around twisted curves, testing the tensile strength of being in tune. The pace of the songs generally stays in the lane of the mid-paced hop: slabs of tribute to rock’n’roll with a similar approach as Pussy Galore, but with less distortion and more melodic vocal delivery. The verse in “Marionette” is delivered with a matter-of-fact growl as if Jonathan Richman had been born on the bayou. “When the Wire Get Cut” takes the pace up just a slap beat and sells a new melody through similar avenues. The band experiments with manipulated sounds a bit here and there, but the remarkable thing is how they can sell each song an earnestly honed 4/4 simplicity.
